Most people assume that beards are relatively maintenance-free. Sure, they can be pretty hands-off if you’re into the scruffy look. But if you want a neat, attractive, healthy-looking beard, you’re going to have to put in a little extra work.
Keep reading our guide to beard grooming to learn how to properly execute a beard care routine.
The Ultimate Beard Care Routine
Wash Your Beard
Cleansing your beard is key to washing away excess dirt and sebum that can irritate the skin underneath your beard. That’s why we recommend washing your beard several times per week.
But you can’t just use any soap. A gentle facial cleanser or even a shampoo will get the job done without drying out your facial hair.
Wet your beard, then squeeze a small amount of product into your hand and apply to your face. Gently work the product through your beard and massage the skin underneath, then rinse thoroughly.
Condition Your Beard
Just like the hair on your head, your beard hair needs some extra TLC to keep it healthy and hydrated.
After shampooing, apply conditioner to the beard and let it sit for a minute or two while the product works its magic. Rinse thoroughly to prevent acne breakouts on the skin underneath.
The most important product in your beard care routine is a high-quality beard oil. Daily wear and tear can make your facial hair brittle, so you must apply a beard oil every day when you step out of the shower to keep your beard soft. Think of it as a leave-in conditioner, but for your beard.
Warm up several drops of oil in your hands, then apply to your beard using your fingertips. Shorter beards will require 3 or 4 drops of beard oil, while longer beards may need as many as 8 drops of beard oil for adequate moisture. After running your fingertips through your beard, use a boar bristle brush to evenly distribute the product.
You can also reapply beard oil throughout the day when you feel like your beard needs a little extra moisture.
If you’re going to trim your beard, now is the time to do it! We recommend giving your beard a trim every week or two. Regular trims help to prevent breakage and split ends. Plus it’s essential for making sure that your beard looks neat and well-groomed.
If your beard looks unruly, you can use a beard balm to smooth and shape your beard. You can even use a hair dryer to smooth your hair! Then use Toppik Hair Building Fibers to fill any sparse areas of your beard and make it appear more full.
Replace the shaker top on the Toppik Fibers with the Toppik Spray Applicator tool. Then spritz the Fibers into place. You can also use the Toppik Hairline Optimizer to create a natural-looking line along the edges of your beard.
To finish the look, spray lightly with Toppik FiberHold Spray. While Fibers are statically charged and will cling to your beard, FiberHold Spray offers a nice, natural-looking finish and will help your fibers to stay even longer.
